Advanced Communication Technologies are Transforming the Maritime Industry

Advanced technologies like audio, video, and data exchange has revolutionized the maritime industry, making it more efficient, secure, and safe. As the industry continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see even more innovative solutions to the challenges facing the industry, which will further improve its performance and contribution to global trade and commerce.

Maritime industry is one of the most important industries in the world, as it plays a significant role in international trade and commerce. In recent years, the industry has seen a significant shift towards digitalization, with the adoption of advanced technologies like audio, video, and data exchange. These technologies have helped streamline operations and improve communication between ships, ports, and other stakeholders in the maritime value chain.

One of the key benefits of audio, video, and data exchange in the maritime industry is improved efficiency. With these technologies, it is now possible to transfer data and information in real-time, enabling ships to make informed decisions quickly. This has helped reduce turnaround times and improve the overall efficiency of the industry. Additionally, these technologies have also allowed for more secure communication and data exchange, ensuring that sensitive information is protected from unauthorized access or interception.

Another major benefit of audio, video, and data exchange in the maritime industry is improved safety. With real-time audio and video communication, ships can now communicate with each other and with ports to avoid collisions and other safety hazards. This has helped reduce the number of accidents in the industry and improved the overall safety of maritime operations.

Bluebox
Advanced connectivity for ships on the high seas
The SCOTTY BlueBox is a hardware coder/decoder and processing unit delivering superior audio, HD video, and data over satellite. The unit supports a wide range of interfaces for applications such as telemedicine, remote maintenance & support, crew welfare, and surveillance. Because the user can select resolution and frame rate to accommodate bandwidth available, live HD video over compact satellite units is easy. Furthermore, the BlueBox has a built-in recording function, a processor for PC applications, and can stream the incoming video to any personal devices connected to the network. Now crews can make video calls to family, managers can send emails, check the Internet and corporate VPN, doctors can perform tele-medicine with specialists, the captain can even contact the coast guard and transmit clandestine surveillance video during a pirate attack! This power and flexibility make the BlueBox unique. The BlueBox is based on two components: the SCOTTY hardware video codec and a compact processor unit. The combination enables duplex video-communication, one-way video streaming, and video recording through IP networks – all of these functions in parallel if needed. The video resolution can be from 352 x 288 pixels (CIF) to 1920 x 1080 pixels (HD Video) depending on the bandwidth available and the user settings – the user can choose between high resolution and low frames per second (fps) or lower resolution and high fps. The BlueBox is compatible to SCOTTY's airborne, stationary, and portable equipment.
Customized Solutions
Tell us your maritime application and we'll give you the comms
As a manufacturer of its own products and an integrator, SCOTTY can provide customized rack solutions with for example the SCOTTY BlueBox or ProMin, third-party devices, video processing equipment, sensors, instruments, etc. The size, specifications, and vibration, shock, and environmental classifications of the rack can be defined with the customer. Encryption, electromagnetic shielding, and other specialized features such as night-vision compatibility are all possible. The SCOTTY equipment is then either especially designed to be compatible to onboard equipment or part of a newly installed package of sensors, comms, and onboard infrastructure. This is all made possible by harmonizing the SCOTTY brand products and customized devices with third party equipment such as the cameras, radios, and SatCom, either newly installed or already being used by the customer. Furthermore, SCOTTY can supply all necessary equipment for the shore – for briefing rooms, offices, and mobile command centers.Although most SCOTTY customers have unique challenges, some examples of common applications include the ability to do scheduled video calls and to exchange personal electronic files with relatives on shore, the means to work intimately with business partners and staff while at sea, tele-medicine, remote support from experts for technical assistance to ships underway, transmission of surveillance video, and transmission of onboard security video.
